Top 5 Actors Turned Musicians

Guest Blogger John Majneber offers up today's Top 5...

Here's my list of my favorite actors that decided to give music a try:

5: Jack Black, (Tenacious D) - This band is a bit of a joke, but is still good enough to make this list (that, or everything else was just that shitty).  Jack black has appeared in Kung Fu Panda, School of Rock, and King Kong.

4: Jared Leto, (30 Seconds to Mars) - While they are probably the most popular and legitimate band on this list, they are not as good as the rest of this list (but are still pretty good).  Jared Leto has appeared in Requiem for a Dream, Lord of War, and Fight Club.

3:  Ryan Gosling, (Dead Man's Bones) -  "Pa Pa Power" single-handedly catapults Ryan Gosling and his band mate Zach Shields to #3 on the list.  He has appeared in The Notebook, Drive, and Blue Valentine

2: Jason Schwartzman, (Phantom Planet, Coconut Records) - Technically Schwartzman was in his band, Phantom Planet, before starting his acting career, but the band was not relevant until around 2002 when its hit song "California" became the theme song for The OC.  By then, Schwartzman's acting career was getting off the ground with his starring role in Rushmore and a guest appearance on Freaks and Geeks.  He is unlike everyone else previously on this list because he came back to the music industry with a solo project, Coconut Records, which I think is much better than Phantom Planet.  He has made additional acting appearances in Fantastic Mr. Fox, I Heart Huckabees, and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.

1: Donald Glover, (Childish Gambino) - Childish Gambino was my inspiration to write this post and is, by far, my favorite artist on this list.  Glover recently released a rap album, "Camp," which stands up to and surpasses all current rap albums.  His clever lines include: "you're my favorite rapper now /  yeah dude I better be / or you can fuckin' kiss my ass, Human Centipede" and "the shit I'm doing this year, insanity / made the beat then murdered it... Casey Anthony."  Donald Glover's acting appearances include The Muppets, Mystery Team, and the TV series, Community.

When you have some spare time, check out these bands if you haven't already, and let us know what you think!  As always, please email, share, or tweet this post to your friends!

  1. What about Kevin Bacon??!

  2. Tupac? or Ice Cube? Rappers are musician? Aren't they.

  3. Meatloaf, but he was in one good movie, Fightclub

  4. Agreed, except they are musicians turned actors--he was looking at it from the other direction.

  5. How about Eddie Murphy (Party All The Time), Arsenio Hall (he put out a rap album as Chunky A), and Patrick Swayze (She's Like The Wind)?

  6. What about Marky Mark and the funky bunch?

You should do a most hilarious top 5 actors / musicians list. Joaquin Phoenix attempted a rap career too but mostly ended up blowing a lot of coke and making a fool of himself. They filmed it as a documentary (I Am Here, on Netflix streaming) and he bombed on Letterman:

Some people think the whole thing was a hoax but I think he just lost his mind and ruined his career.

Btw John we should chill soon I'm back in CT.

  7. The joacquim phoenix thing was confirmed as a hoax by phoenix himself. He even did a second letterman appearance a couple years later to apologize to dave

  8. The Joaquin Phoenix thing was eventually revealed to be a hoax. Phoenix himself confirmed it and even went on Letterman a second time to discuss the hoax.

  9. The Blues Brothers.
